AMD vs. Intel: What to Get? Which is Better?

There are countless companies in the computer industry but there is only one battle that counts... AMD vs. Intel. This is a favorite topic in the forums, yet instead of blindly pledging allegiance to one CPU or the other, let's take a look behind the scenes and find out which companies processor is the best bet.Now I should say that I'm a hardware enthusiast at heart, so for me CPU performance matters the most. I stick with gear only as long as it keeps my PC at the front of the performance curve. After that, I drop it like a rock and move onto greener pastures, regardless if it's the same brand or not. After all, what's the point of brand loyalty? AMD and Intel don't love you back, no matter how much you might sing their praises. Put another way, it's not like AMD only sells to you, or Intel has a smiling shot of your mug on every pay stub as a testament to your past processor purchases now is it?The nice thing about being computer enthusiast is that right now both AMD and Intel platforms support a lot of cross compatible hardware. Sure the CPU and motherboards are platform specific, but you can share DDR2 memory, videocards and other peripherals easily enough. If PC speed is what you crave, you can jump from one processor platform to the next ever couple months, taking your memory, videocards, hard drives and everything else along with you.Anyway, the point I'm trying make is this. As a hardware enthusiast you have the pick of some of the fastest computer hardware on the planet. Ignore the urge to stick with AMD or Intel out of tradition, go out there and find the best gear based on benchmarks! So, who offers the best performance - is it AMD or Intel? I'm glad you asked, the answer is.......Intel. For the moment anyway, Intel's dual and quad core processors are the king of the heap. In particular, the companies Core 2 Duo/Quad processor lineup is out-pacing AMDs current Athlon64 X2/FX processor families. That may indeed change by the end of Q4'07, or it may not.AMD is partly to blame for its current situation. Big green has not refreshed its CPU lineup since the last time PCSTATS dished the dirt on the AMD vs. Intel slugfest. AMD won the battle back then, but relying on the now somewhat dated K8 Athlon64 processor has left AMD without a good competing CPU for Intel's "Conroe". Intel published performance results on "Conroe" for quite some time before it was officially released, so it's not like AMD was blindsided by it either.
The Intel® Desktop Board DX58SO

The Intel® Desktop Board DX58SOis designed to unleash the power of the all new Intel® Core™ i7 processors with support for up to eight threads of raw CPU processing power, triple channel DDR3 memory and full support for ATI CrossfireX* technology. Today’s PC games like Far Cry 2* and Call of Duty: World at War* need a computing platform that delivers maximum multi-threaded CPU support and eye-popping graphics support.

The good: Attractive, color-customizable fabric trim; screen has wide tilt range to accommodate touch input at multiple heights; simple, easy-to-use touch software; performance appropriate to its price.
The bad: High-end configuration outclassed by other all-in-ones with larger screens and better features for the same price.
The bottom line: We suspect lower-end configurations of the Dell Studio One 19 all-in-one desktop will draw consumers looking for a low-cost, "fast enough" PC. But even its multitouch interface can't save our expensive review unit from other vendors' similarly priced all-in-ones with better features for the dollar.
Specifications: Processor: Intel Pentium Dual Core E5200 (2500 MHz) ; Clock speed: 2500 MHz ; RAM installed: 4 GB DDR2 SDRAM ; See full specs

U.S. computer chip firm Intel fined record £900m over monopoly sales tactics

Intel has been fined a staggering £900million for a marketing ploy that locked out rivals and effectively put up the cost of home computers.
The U.S. computer chip firm was found to have offered payments to manufacturers and retailers to ensure they sold only computers equipped with its processors.
Intel gave rebates to a number of computer makers, including Acer, Dell and HP, for buying their chips.
It also paid them to stop or delay the launch of computers that used processors made by U.S. rival AMD.
The move also resulted in the public paying too much for computers, where the chip accounts for 15-30 per cent of the price.
The fine is a record for the EU's Competition Commission, dwarfing the £330million levied on Microsoft in 2004 for abusing its dominant market position.
It was based on the value of Intel's European chip sales during the period of five years and three months that it broke the law.
Competition Commissioner Neelie Kroes said: 'Intel has harmed millions of European consumers by deliberately acting to keep competitors out of the market for computer chips for many years.'
'Such a serious and sustained violation of the EU's antitrust rules cannot be tolerated.'
EU regulators said they calculated Intel's fine on the value of its European chip sales over the five years and three months that it broke the law.

Intel Computers Receive Phone Calls

While everybody is getting comfortable with using Skype on their computers as an alternative to the conventional phone, the fact that the computer needs to be turned on will always be a source of irritation. Intel has just come up with a nifty new component which allows a computer to go to sleep, and “wake up” whenever there is an incoming call, which would be a great way to save on electricity bills. It will even be smart enough to turn on the microphone and speakers to alert the users, and connect the call. Time to trash your standard phone? Maybe, but you might want to hang on to it for a while more, for nostalgia.
